Hot Water Beach

Hot Water Beach is one of the most famous New Zealand attractions is located only 20 minutes from Pacific Harbour Villas. Take a spade, or hire one when you get there, and dig a hole on the beach, when the tide is low, your hole will fill with hot mineral water - you'll have your very own hot pool! The ultimate time to visit Hot Water Beach is two hours either side of low tide.

Cathedral Cove

Cathedral Cove - the filming location of The Chronicle of Narnia - Prince Caspian - for the perfect day trip. Take a picnic and enjoy one of the many scenic walks in the area or take a dip in the protected marine reserve where you can experience some of New Zealand's spectacular marine life. Take a walk over the hill to Hahei Beach which is great for swimming.

Scenic boat rides

For those liking to do some activities, take a trip exploring the caves and blowholes around the marine reserve whilst learning a little of the history. Summit Mount Paku - Tairua

Paku is the extinct volcano at the head of the Tairua harbour where the estuary flows to the sea. You can drive by car close to the top and from the parking space (Parku drive) it’s only a short walk of approx. 250 metres to the summit. Or you can take the walkway among the harbour to the ocean beach and from there the walkway to the summit (approx. 1.5 to 2 hour walk from Pacific Harbour Villas).

Broken Hills Recreation Area walking tracks

Nestled beside the slow-moving Tairua River, Broken Hills is a tranquil holiday hideaway in a picturesque setting. Around the turn of the 20th century, a bustling gold-mining settlement named Puketui was established in the Broken Hills Gorge. This beautiful gorge now provides many opportunities for walking, swimming, canoeing, trout fishing, exploring, rafting, bird watching, photography, picnicking and camping.

309 Road - Scenic Route

The 309 Road is a 22.0 km, narrow, winding, gravel road between Whitianga and the town of Coromandel. In fact, it's the shortest route between Mercury Bay's Whitianga and the Hauraki Gulf's Coromandel township. This scenic route follows the meandering Mahakirau Stream up the Mercury Bay side, over the 306 metre summit and along the Waiau River as it descends through pine forest, native bush, scrub and to the farmlands just south of Coromandel. It presents no problem to the motorist who drives steadily and stays well to the left around the corners.

Driving Creek Railways & Potteries

New Zealand's only narrow-gauge train ride in the Coromandel along with a working pottery and wild life sanctuary. The one-hour return Coromandel train ride on our innovatively designed trains takes you through replanted native kauri forest and includes two spirals, three short tunnels, five reversing points and several large viaducts as it climbs up to the mountain-top terminus.

New Chums Beach

Voted one of the Top 20 Beaches in the world in 2006 by The Observer, remains a gem to those who know of it’s existence and a true discovery tour for the first time visitor. Large Pohutukawas and native fauna fringe the white sands of one of the last undeveloped beaches on the Coromandel Peninsula. Enjoy a leisurely walk the length of this pristine white sandy beach.
